First rejection of 2003 ...

A little packet of my biblical voice poems (read them here) arrived on my doorstep today, accompanied by a tiny note from the Beloit Poetry Journal with a penciled "good -- sorry" on it. Another rejection for Leah et al. My "that must be because they are lower than whale shite" reaction lasted only a few hours, which is a new record. Even the sulk is largely lifting.

I must really believe in these biblical poems. I put together a ten-page batch to toss to the grantors last week, and I felt good about them then, too. Usually when I see my work all in one place it makes me want to take up a career in, say, marine science. Or plumbing.

Well, the Bible poems must be heading out again. I'm not sure to where. Thanks to Holly, I've got a list of American magazines to target, but my sample copies haven't come yet. (Yes, I order sample copies. I have only once sold a piece of writing to a magazine I hadn't read -- and once I saw it, I regretted sending the poem there.)

So, back to the old wish list, which is getting a little worn. Maybe Prairie Fire. Maybe Prairie Schooner, my old favourite from my days drinking coffee and writing in the Mill in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska, where the magazine was being edited at the next table.

Therese, who helped send those grant requests said:

The biblical poems are good, no, wonderful. They make me care about the people in them, and not just God who caused them to be written about and remembered throughout the ages.

Btw, Orson Scott Card has a series out, about Women of the Old Testament. I know he’s done Sarah and Rebekah, and maybe Ruth. Remember, though, he’s LDS, and appearantly that shows up in his story-telling. But it might be of interest.
