Afraid of the Light
The stars are afraid of the light
When the sun comes out they take fright
They change like chameleons
To hide their true feelings
They turn blue and vanish from sight
The bats are afraid of the birds
As soon as the birds can be heard
The bats go a-tumbling
Back down to the goblins
And into their underground world
Your dreams are afraid of your mind
If you think about them you'll find
They change into horses
They run off their courses
They turn into flicker and shine
The dark is afraid of the day
In light the dark slinks away
It naps into the closet
It's best not to bother it
You never know what it might say

I don't know what's come over me, I just feel like writing kids stuff all of a sudden. Well, more than that, really: lines like "the dark is afraid of the day" pop into my head like the lyrics to "The Candyman" and play over and over again all day long. In a good way. Mostly.
Anyway, I'm tossing off my high-brow literary credentials -- such as they are -- and putting a kid's poetry section on this site (see the topic headings to the left). So if you like this, come back for more.

I like. Although the horses and dreams reminds me a little bit of the old “Night Mare” pun. Which is ok. I think writing kids stuff isn’t bad, it’s showing the breadth of your abilities, which is wonderful. Trying different things makes the things you focus on (your ‘main’ type of writing) even stronger.
Clean limericks! It can be done…
Way to go! These are great, and you really should keep them coming! I was bitten by a similar bug 3 years ago and ended up with a couple that play through my head many a time, and way too often. I hope you don’t mind I include them.
That crazy old pot bellied pig. Jumped right up and danced us a jig. He went right from sleepin’ To boppin’ and weavin’ We figure he plumb flipped his wig.
Beg pardon, beg pardon, Oh kind sir or madam Haven’t you seen my dog? He’s brown and he’s furry— I really am worried— Without me he thinks he’s a frog.
