Usefulness

a still noon
   frost hung in banners
      and bells

that step and fade
   down each
      level crossing

crow-calls of rails
   in the switch yard
      clank and moan

and the long shudder of cars
   coming together --
      a train building itself

and me, walking home
   with my hat off
      just to listen

________
under the influence of SB and Mary Oliver, though not living up to either. Don't like the title.

The title “Usefulness” is growing on me, actually. I want a title for this one that’s a little more than a carry-handle. Something to suggest the emotional freight of the poem.

But I still doen’t think it’s quite right.
