Going to Winnipeg Writers' Festival!

I've been invited to read at my very first writers' festival, the "Thin Air" Winnipeg International Writers' Festival. With Don McKay! and Robert Kroetsch! Here's the program copy:

Campus poetry panel at the University of Winnipeg
Friday, September 24, 2:30-4:00

The Friday afternoon panel features a rollicking crew of poets this year. Erin Noteboom burst into visibility with a CBC Literary Prize; Don McKay is a two-time Governor Generals Award-winner and a Griffin Poetry prize nominee; George Bowering is Canadas distinguished but unstuffy Poet Laureate; John Havelda is British-born poet from Portugal who performed his edgy brilliance on our poetry stage last year. Bring your curiosity and your questions!

Mainstage POETRY BASH
Saturday, September 25, 7:30-9:30

In this annual Festival favorite, the poets take over the stage with their spinning words. Erling Friis-Bastaad brings his delicate observations of the Yukon wilderness, Catherine Greenwood her beautifully-wrought ponderings of small perfections. Louise Halfe offers her incisive renderings of life as an Aboriginal woman, and Erin Noteboom her compassionate portrait of a soldier longing for home. Winnipegger Robert Kroetsch's new poems carry his signature wit and edge. The evening closes with a rare opportunity to hear haunting Portuguese fado, a traditional lyric folk music, sung by the Portuguese singer and actor Lgia Roque.

I will most likely give some one-on-one "Master Classes" to local writers, if anyone out there is in the neighbourhood. Excited!

Ooohh! Sounds like lots of fun.

But if it’s warm, take lots of OFF…Winnipeg is mosquito capital of the Universe. ;-)

You’ll be smashing!

But, didn’t you read at the Eden Mills festival a year or so ago? So this wouldn’t be your first. Just your first as a headliner.

That’s true, in 2002 I read at the Eden Mills Fringe, which is the small stage for community members selected by a jury. I had a great time at Eden Mills and hope someday to go back as an invited reader.

In the meantime, I guess should say this is my first invitation.

(but I have stilled and quieted) was the previous entry in this blog.

A Mainstream Manifesto is the next entry in this blog.
