fragments for Wendy (from the funeral)

We held Wendy's memorial at the Holy Family shrine near Gretna, Nebraska -- a patch of re-planted prairie grass and flowers on a hill overlooking steep fields. A sunny, windy, prairie summer day. The chapel itself is made of glass. I spent the whole service looking out the window.

     a slope of soybeans --
     brightness
     passing in waves

Closer to the church walls, butterflies, birds.

     mourning cloaks
     in the wild clover

The chapel was packed but muffled. Lars's brother Phil played the cello. Bach, mostly. The sarabande he played at their wedding.

     cello suite --
     a child
           screaming
