Today my family is gathering at the Holy Family Shrine, where Wendy's ashes are scattered. They are taking rakes and shovels and wheelbarrows and are helping with the fall gardening and marijuana killing. They are going to mass in their gardening clothes. I can't be there: I'm 800 miles away and nine months pregnant. My midwife says the baby could be born anytime. I'm so excited.
a sob, then a gasp
from the baby's kick --
grief and joy:
the wings of breath
