Full contact eating, with your host, Vivian

Vivi had pizza for lunch.

Pizza-eating is an evolving process at our house. It used to be that Vivian would clean off all the red peppers on an entire pizza and call that a meal. But she no longer likes small bits. She wants a slice. (In fact, if there are two slices, she wants the big slice.) She grabs the pizza by the sides, digs in with her long and dainty fingers, then presses the whole thing flat against her face.

Then she gnaws her way free.

Forget her hair: today she got pizza in her armpits.

Erin,

The Mongoose Diaries was such a delight to read. My girls are grown, yet as I read, many of those early days, my feelings as a first, second and third time mother came back to me: the proud moments, the painful, the doubting ones too. Thanks for sharing your personal journey, including that of grief at losing your sister Wendy.

My favorite poems in this book are “Small, Common, Secret, Strong,” the one on page 183 beginning with the line “Deep calls to deep” and the one on page 203 about the freight train out of Colorado.” Also “Learning to walk, my daughter grows lighter”- a sign of our children growing up … and eventually away from us.

Keep writing.
